It is expected that we will experience record-breaking cold temperatures starting on Thursday. Because of this, we are requesting everyone’s assistance in preparing for the possibility of frozen pipes. Frozen pipes can take hours to thaw and fix, which may result in a long wait for someone to come address the issue. Additionally, frozen pipes can burst and cause significant damage to homes. To help prevent as many frozen pipes as possible, we ask that everyone take the following actions by Thursday morning:

  1. Double and triple check that all hoses have been removed from the outside of the home or building.
  2. If you are in a house, be sure that crawl space covers are closed.
  3. Let a small amount of water trickle from your faucets.
  4. Open all cabinet doors and leave them open (pipes may run through the walls behind the cabinets, even if they are not visible).
  5. Keep your heat on at a setting of 70-72 degrees from Thursday to Sunday or until the weather warms up.
  6. Have a backup plan for water (for up to two days) in case your pipes do freeze.
  7. Watch this video for more information on frozen pipes and trickling water: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV_dEeF05iI
  8. If you are traveling for the holiday, please consider having someone check on your home to ensure that the heat is still working and that your pipes have not frozen.
